Sports Mass

Playing sports has become very important today, since it can encourage young people to develop important values such as loyalty, perseverance, friendship, sharing and solidarity.” – Pope St. John Paul II

Sports Masses started as a way to integrate our student athletes more deeply into our parish community and refocus our athletic programs onto the faith that brings us all together. They serve as a way to highlight our athletes to ask for prayer and blessing upon them as they start a new season that we hope will be successful and safe, and to instill in them the virtues that sport participation can bring. As Pope John Paull II said, “Sports contribute to the love of life, teaches sacrifice, respect and responsibility, leading to the full development of every human person…Sport trains body and spirit for perseverance, effort, courage, balance, sacrifice, honesty, friendship and collaboration.”

Sport Masses occur (almost) once per month, with each Mass designated to a different sport. Athletes are invited to serve as lectors, ushers, greeters and bring up the offertory. The team sits together in a designated area for Mass and are encouraged to wear their jersey.

We invite you to join us for these special Masses as we pray for our athletes to grow in faith, virtue and holiness.

Give thanks to God for the gift of sport, in which the human person exercises his body, intellect and will, recognizing these abilities as so many gifts of his Creator.” – Pope St. John Paull II
